Reference Interview Questions

Often times library patrons don’t ask for what they really want when they approach the information desk.  The process of asking questions to encourage patrons to describe their information needs is called the reference interview.  The more patrons can tell you, the easier it will be for you to direct them to the right resource or person.

Below are some sample reference interview questions.  Avoid yes/no questions as much as possible.

  • What course is this for?
  • Could you explain your assignment to me?
  • Do you have a copy of the assignment with you?
  • Where have you searched so far?
  • What types of resources do you need?
