English Research Guide

English

Welcome to the English Research Guide! This guide is intended to be a starting point for students in the English courses by providing information on how to obtain books/e-books, peer-reviewed articles, web resources, and citation help. Please do not hesitate to ask for help if you have any questions!

Databases

The University library subscribes to a number (over 200!) of online databases that help you locate articles, which are all available through the A-Z Databases page. Below I've listed several databases related to the subject of English  that you should try first when searching for articles.

Search Tips

While not every database works the same way, keep these general search tips in mind when looking for articles.

1.Use the advanced search option

Think of the mulitple search fields as a hierarchy. Place the terms with the highest importance in the top box and then enter terms in the boxes below to narrow your results.

2. Use the limitors to narrow your results

All databases have additional limiters. They will generally appear on either the left or right hand side of the search results page.

Examples of limiters include full text, date, subjects, population, peer reviewed or document type.

3. Don't forget to look at the bibliography listed at the end of articles. They provide suggestions for further reading and study. Use the 'Find a specific Journal' link  in the box on the left to see if the library has it in our collection.

4Be prepared to experiment with different combinations of key terms.  Then evaluate your results, make adjustments, and try again. Examine the subjects that are associated with an article that closely matches your thesis to assist you with finding more helpful articles. Input those keywords into the search fields.

Google Scholar

You can access library resources by searching Google Scholar!

If you are on-campus, you will be automatically recognized as a member of the A&M-SA community. If you are off-campus, you will need to configure the settings for Google Scholar so that it knows you are a member of the A&M-SA community. Please see How to Set Up Google Scholar for Off-Campus Use for instructions.

Please keep in mind that not everything available through your library is cited on Google Scholar, so be sure to also use the library's online databases for your research needs. You can also ask your subject librarian for help!

You will need to enter your A&M-SA network username and password to get into the library's databases from off-campus. If you need assistance with this, please visit our Off-Campus Access page.
