Called the "administrator of national banks", the OCC charters, regulates and supervises national banks "to ensure a safe, sound and competitive banking system that supports the citizens, communities and economy of the United States." As of 2011, the Office of Thrift Supervision was also integrated into the OCC.

The SEC requires public companies, including publicly-traded banks, to disclose specific financial and other information to the public. Banks also engage in securities underwriting and securities brokering, which are activities regulated by the SEC.

The NCUA is an "independent federal agency that regulates, charters and supervises federal credit unions."

Established by Congress "to protect consumers by carrying out federal consumer financial laws." They also have a strong educational bent, with a goal to facilitate the exchange of information necessary for consumers "to understand the terms of their agreements with financial companies."

The OCC is the primary regulator of banks chartered under the National Bank Act and federal savings associations chartered under the Home Owners Loan Act of 1933.
