Banned Books Week Read Aloud

Banned Books Week (BBW) 2023 will be celebrated from October 1-7. The 2023 theme is "Let Freedom Read." The 2023 theme "captures what's at stake for our democracy: that the safety of our right to speak and think freely is directly in proportion to our right to read."  The American Library Association (ALA) encourages libraries to mark Banned Books Week by inviting other groups within their communities to celebrate and take action to protect our freedom to read all year long.

The American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) tracks attempts to ban or restrict access to books.  The OIF documented 1,269 demands to censor library books and resources in 2022, which is the highest number of attempted book bans since ALA began compiling data on censorship more than 20 years ago.  The unparalleled number of reported book challenges in 2022 nearly doubles the 729 book challenges reported in 2021. Of the record 2,571 unique titles, the most challenged and reasons cited for censoring the books are listed here.  Most targeted books were by or about LGBTQIA+ persons and Black, Indigenous, and people of color.

Join us for our in person BBW Read Aloud on Tuesday, October 3 from 9:30 to 10:45am on the first floor of the new library in Business Library Hall.  Attendees are welcome to read from their favorite banned or challenged book.  A cart of books will be available to pick from.

Visit this page for more information on this year's theme.
